I don't have any BDXL writeable discs because they're very expensive, but my new drive couldn't read my Oppenheimer UHD disc at all until I upgraded the drive with LibreDrive firmware. LibreDrive firmware does strip out all the region-specific stuff, but as I understand it, many UHD discs are region free anyway (the packaging for Oppenheimer doesn't mention a region code either). The drive could read standard region B BR discs before the firmware upgrade.
